An SUV traveling north on White Horse Road struck the man’s car as he was making the turn. The man in the sedan died at the scene of the T-bone collision, and the driver of the SUV sustained injuries that required hospitalization.

The underlying cause of the collision remains under investigation. Troopers claim they have not filed any charges at this time.

What Makes T-Bone Collisions So Dangerous?

T-bone collisions, or side-impact crashes, are fairly common. They typically occur at intersections and are usually the result of reckless, negligent, or distracted driving, which means they are almost always preventable.

Side-impact crashes are especially devastating because the doors on cars, trucks, and SUVs are not nearly as strong as the rest of the vehicle’s framing. Aside from the middle backseat, every seat in a car also happens to be stationed right next to a door, which means when a collision occurs, there is nothing between the driver or passenger and the other vehicle aside from a thin sheet of metal.

Depending on the speed at which the accident occurs and the precise location of impact, T-bone collisions can be fatal. Additionally, individuals who survive such accidents often sustain serious injuries. Common injuries resulting from a side-impact crash include:

  • Fractured or broken bones;
  • Lacerations;
  • Blunt trauma;
  • Traumatic brain injuries;
  • Internal bleeding;
  • Whiplash;
  • Nerve or spinal cord injury; and
  • Airbag burns.

How Can You Avoid T-Bone Collisions?

Although you have no control over the other motorists on the road around you, you can certainly take steps to avoid causing a T-bone collision yourself. For example, you can make it a point to remain alert at all intersections.

Do not pick up your phone to send a quick text message simply because the traffic light is red. Taking your eyes off the road even when stopped could prevent you from seeing any road hazards that arise while you are waiting at the light. You should also make it a point to drive defensively, and never assume that another motorist will give you the right of way, even when you should technically have it.
